Term dates vary across the UK, please select your nation below to check when the new school year starts.
Most schools go back Tuesday 1 September 2026, though this varies by a day or two depending on the local authority/academy trust — some might start 2–3 September. Set by each Local Authority individually, so exact dates differ by up to a week between areas.
The most reliable starting point is gov.uk/school-term-holiday-dates. You enter your postcode or local authority, and it links through to your council’s published term dates.
The Welsh academic year now follows a single national framework agreed by all 22 local authorities, with the autumn term beginning Monday 1 September. This is largely aligned with England.
The approved school dates for 2026-2027 can also be found here: gov.wales/approved-school-term-dates-2026-2027
Scotland doesn’t have one national return date — each of the 32 councils sets its own term dates, and this year the dates are staggered across August.
The general range: 12–20 August 2026, with most councils clustered around 12–19 August.
A few examples:
Schools typically go back 1–2 September 2026. Summer runs from around 1 July to 31 August, with return usually 1 September, though a few schools go back on the 2nd.
You can also visit nidirect.gov.uk which has a school holidays section with term dates.
